Branching Design

Creative Brief
This design was picked on a vote out of several other submissions and was selected as the main image for the marketing/branding campaign for the Shoreline Community College VCT Club’s 2016 Portfolio Show. This image was used on posters, signs, invitations, booklets, & business cards to promote the student show.
Brainstorming
The theme for the show was ‘Branching Design.’ The VCT program starts with everyone taking the intro classes together and eventually selecting a focused speciality within the program. This made me think of a tree, with the principles of design as our foundation and trunk and our specialized focuses as the branches reaching out on different paths. The trunk is made up of the words branching design, and the branches and leaves of the tree are the different specialities the program had to offer. The single red portfolio represents a ripe portfolio ready to be picked and enter the professional world of design. I kept the color scheme to three colors (red, green and black).
The Challenge
The challenge of this project was the invites. The previous year had done a pop-up cube which stood out and brought attention to the show. So the Design & Branding team wanted to emulate that previous design with a pop-up tree. It look a lot of research to find a pop-up design that was minimally labor intensive as well as cost effective, as we had a fast approaching deadline to get the invites printed and out. The final design was made up of three die-cut parts that were fastened with a rubber band to produce the spring. Working as a team the club got together to fold, glue and pack the envelopes getting them out on time.
